Anne Seddon Kinsolving Brown: Biographical Outline

1906
Born in Brooklyn to the Rev. Arthur Barksdale Kinsolving and Sally Bruce Kinsolving, a poet, the fifth of their seven children and the third of five girls.
1912
Began study at The Calvert School in Baltimore.
1918
Attended The Bryn Mawr School, a private high school for girls, in Baltimore.
1921
Joined the Johns Hopkins Orchestra as a violinist.
1923
Became a debutante.
1924
Completed her studies at Bryn Mawr School.
1925
Began writing columns for The Baltimore News, a Baltimore daily newspaper.
1926
Sent to cover the western tour of French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen for The Baltimore News.
1930
Met John Nicholas Brown at the wedding of Richmond Keith Kane and Amanda Stewart Bryan in Richmond, Virginia. Married John Nicholas Brown in Baltimore on October 18th, in a service performed by her father in his parish church, St. Paul's. During their yearlong honeymoon trip in Europe, Anne begins to collect tin soldiers.
1931
Returned with JNB to Providence to set up house at 357 Benefit Street. Became involved with the Providence Community Concerts Association.
1932
Son Nicholas born.
1933
Persuaded JNB to purchase a schooner, renamed Saraband, and enter her in the racing circuit.
1934
Son John Carter (called Carter) born.
1936
Redecorates "Brown Cottage" (later renamed "Holiday Hill") on Fisher's Island as a 40th Anniversary gift to her parents.
1937
With JNB, plans the interior decorations for the Richard Neutra house, Windshield, on Fisher's Island
1938
Daughter Angela born.
1939
Breaks her hip in a fall during a winter trip to Arizona, and is bedridden for two months.
1941
Begins war work for Rhode Island Red Cross in Newport, managing the Red Cross Canteen.
1946
Set up house in Washington for JNB's tenure as Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air. Hosted official Navy functions, and became part of the Washington social scene.
1948
Organized the Navy Relief Ball.
1949
Becomes a Founder of the Company of Military Historians.
1950
Began yacht racing with JNB on Bolero.
1957
Took a five-month world tour with JNB aboard the H.M.S. Caronia.
1961
Publishes her English translation of Henry Lachouque's history of the Imperial Guard of Napoleon, under the title The Anatomy of Glory.
1962
Second edition of The Anatomy of Glory published.
1972
With Prof. Howard Rice, publishes The American Campaigns of Rochambeau's Army, a translation of three French military diaries.
1978
Third Edition of The Anatomy of Glory published.
1981
Purchased a condominium in Palm Beach in order to establish residency in Florida for tax purposes. Donated her now extensive collection of military books, prints and soldiers to Brown University.
1983
Testified at the murder trial of Claus von Bulow on behalf of the defendant.
1985
Died of cancer at Harbour Court in Newport
