Description: This tallcase clock with a sawn waves crest set among three brass urn finials, is decorated with quarter columns and hood columns enhanced with brass fittings. The enameled face, with gold and delicate floral trim and fine blued steel hands, was also known as the "japanned" iron dial, which popularized colorful spandrels after 1780. Engraved with Roman numerals and Arabic minute gradations, the arched dial with calendar and two winding arbors, is sheltered in mahogany bonnet with a beveled glass door. Provenance: Helen Maude Eddy was born February 16, 1876, the daughter of Dr. Elmer B. Eddy and Emily Tillinehast at 27 Fruit Hill Ave, Providence. She entered Pembroke College in 1895 and upon graduating in 1899, married Dr. Alanson D. Rose, who would be a Rhode Island physician for more than 50 years. A resident of North Providence at the time of his death in 1946, Dr. Rose had carried on an extensive practice in Providence, Manton, Johnston and Smithfield. Helen Eddy lived at the Minden Apartments for some time and personally presented a grandfather clock to the college just four months before her death on October 22, 1955. She also bequeathed a mahogany desk and a blue hair-cloth chair to Pembroke College.
