The Core List of Twenty Modernist Journals in the Cover-to-Cover Initiative

These are the top twenty magazines for which the MJP would like to locate cover-to-cover copies. The list is in the order of interest to us, with those at the top having the highest priority. For copyright reasons, we are only interested in material before 1923, even though some of our top priority journals continued after that date. We have not included in this list journals already in our digital archive unless we are still trying to locate cover-to-cover issues that are missing from our edition (as with Scribner's) or unless we are interested in digitizing issues beyond the years we have archived (as with The English Review). We also have not included journals whose full cover-to-cover holdings we have located (for those journals, see the separate list at the bottom of this page). Finally, we are interested only in original hard copies, not reprints (even if the latter happen to be cover-to-cover reproductions), since we can only work with the originals.

We've summed up the cover-to-cover status of each magazine below using these six categories:

  • Not Yet Located
  • Some Not Yet Located
  • Under Review by a Library (or Under Partial Review by a Library, if an incomplete run is identified)
  • Complete (for discovered paper material)
  • In Process by a Library (for the eventual digitization effort)
  • Digitized Complete

Cover-to-Cover Journals Located by the MJP

When we find a full cover-to-cover run of a journal (prior to 1923), or when we are able to piece together from various holdings a full cover-to-cover run, we will move that journal's information from the top list on this page to this bottom list, which will become the basis for a growing inventory of cover-to-cover journals up to 1923. Though we are most interested in information about the twenty journals in the top list, we'd be happy to receive further holdings information about any of these journals as well.
