Programs

Digital scholarship at Brown is being pursued and fostered all across the university. Within the library, the Center for Digital Scholarship provides support for these activities through a number of programs designed to offer practical assistance, strategic guidance, expertise, long-term technological infrastructure, and opportunities to learn more about both the theory and practice of digital scholarship. The programs listed below serve faculty, students, departments and centers, and the broader public.

Education in Digital Methods and Practices
CDS staff teach seminars and workshops (at Brown and outside Brown) on topics in digital scholarship and digital humanities, including text encoding, information design, digitization, metadata, and other areas as appropriate. The CDS also supports faculty who want to apply digital methods in their graduate or undergraduate courses, in collaboration with the Instructional Technology Group, the Multimedia Lab, and other groups as appropriate. Fellowships and Internships
The CDS sponsors internships, fellowships, and scholar-in-residence programs focusing on digital humanities and digital libraries, in collaboration as appropriate with other groups at Brown such as the Cogut Center, the John Nicholas Brown Center, and others. These programs bring scholars from outside Brown to campus to work closely with CDS staff and the Brown community. These programs emphasize exchange of information and expertise. Interns and fellows may participate in CDS projects, conduct research on CDS collections, or engage in independent research projects that draw on CDS expertise. More information…

Outreach and Dissemination
The CDS hosts and sponsors conferences, colloquia, lecture series, and other public events on topics in digital scholarship, independently and in partnership with groups at Brown or at other institutions. We are particularly interested in supporting new modes of scholarship and scholarly publication. The record of CDS work, including finished projects, project analysis and reports, and other documentation, is also disseminated through the CDS research library and project documentation.

Project Development and Support
The CDS develops digital projects that express and engage the academic work of the university. Scholars may seek assistance with original research or seek support with systems that support and enhance mediated activities such as conferences, publications, and collaborative and social media tools. The CDS coordinates these activities with other library units such as ITS and SR, as well as units within Academic Services in CIS. More information…

Digitization of Research Collections
The CDS creates digital research collections based on the holdings of the University Library. These collections include not only digitized library holdings, but also contextual materials including student work, faculty research, and related works contributed by library staff. More information…

Research and Development
The CDS develops funding proposals, independently and in partnership with faculty and other groups at Brown, to support the development of new digital tools and broaden the practice of digital scholarship at Brown. We’re particularly interested in initiatives that create new opportunities for collaboration or suggest new directions for scholarly activity. More information…
