Among the major activities of CDS is the development and ongoing support of digital scholarly projects and systems at Brown. We work closely with faculty and with other centers at Brown, as well as in collaboration with partners at other institutions, on all aspects of digital projects including planning, design, transcription and digitization of source material, interface and information design, training, documentation, and long-term support and archiving. We also investigate and maintain expertise on a wide range of cutting-edge tools for digital scholarship. Several CDS programs directly support scholarly work by faculty and students and contribute to the digitization of important research materials. We maintain a library of current and completed projects, including documentation and related readings.
The major CDS programs in this area are:
- Scholarly Grants: This annual grant program offers Brown faculty and postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to plan and develop digital scholarly projects, including publications, research and analysis tools, digital research collections, and investigations of new digital scholarly methods. Grant assistance covers design, technical development and advising, digitization of source material from Brown collections, and archiving in the Brown digital repository. For more detailed information and to apply for a grant, please see our guidelines and call for proposals. For examples of current and completed projects, please see our projects page.
- Graduate dissertation grants: This program is aimed at graduate students in the humanities and discursive social sciences, whose dissertation research includes digital project development or a digital research topic. CDS staff provide grant recipients with advice and consultation on project design, training in specific methods, techniques, and tools, and mentoring on digital humanities issues and research questions. For more information and to apply, please see our guidelines and call for proposals.
- Consultation: CDS staff are always available for consultation and advice on digital grant applications, new project ideas, questions about digital tools and approaches, and advice on including digital humanities issues and methods in teaching. For more information please visit us or contact us via email to schedule an appointment.
- Grant proposal development: CDS provides consultation and assistance to faculty developing external grant proposals to fund digital scholarly projects. We can assist with project and proposal planning, development of appropriate technical specifications and language, and identification of appropriate technical support and costs. For more information please contact us.
- Data Curation and Long-term Preservation:
CDS provides long-term support for digital scholarly projects and
publications, including digital repository services and expertise in
data standards and maintenance. CDS staff bring long-range considerations to bear on all stages of development to ensure that projects are designed and developed for permanence, interoperability and scalability. More information…
