This course is a study of the representations and the functions of the Orient (Turkey, Arabia, China, Persia) in the imaginary of classical and modern French and francophone writers of the nineteen and the twentieth century. Through the analysis of the phantasms pertaining to the representations of Sexuality and Power, this course will also attempt to study a series of figures associated with the Orient like travestissement, melancholia, nostalgia, etc. in the novels of French writers like Chateaubriand, Flaubert, Gautier, Nerval, Isabelle Eberhardt , Christine Baroche and others.
