The Trusteeship Council stopped regular operations in 1994 when Palau, the last remaining United Nations Trust Territory, gained independence. However, it can still meet when requested. The Trusteeship Council was set up as one of the main organs of the United Nations, which needed to supervise the administration of Trust Territories (colonies). Its goals were to to promote the advancement of the inhabitants and their progress towards independence.
