Special Collections AccessBrown University’s John Hay Library is undergoing a major renovation beginning in the Summer of 2013.  Renovation of this historic landmark will include a refurbishment of the magnificent first floor reading room into an open, welcoming study space; the creation of a new state-of-the-art special collections reading room in the area that formerly housed University Archives; the building of a new exhibition gallery; an addition of a student lounge and a private conference room; and the installation of handicapped access to the front of the building. Fire safety and security system improvements will also be addressed by the renovation.

To accommodate the extensive work involved in the renovation, the John Hay Library will close beginning June 1, 2013, and will remain closed through the duration of the construction project until Fall 2014.

There will be no access to the building during the renovation, and use of Special Collections & Archives materials by faculty, students, and other researchers will be limited.  Beginning on Monday, June 24, there will be a temporary special collections reading room (A10) in the Rockefeller Library for Brown and Brown-affiliated faculty and students to consult Special Collections & Archives materials retrieved from the Annex or requested in advance of the Hay Library’s temporary closing. Use of the A10 reading room is by appointment only.  Appointments can be made by emailing HayReadingRoom@brown.edu or calling 401-863-3723.  Due to space constraints, researchers are requested to limit appointments to two hours and make them by noon on Friday of the week prior to the requested appointment time.  Confirmation emails will be sent by noon on Sunday.  The A10 reading room will be open from 9:30-4:00 Monday through Friday during the Summer and from 9:30-4:30 Monday through Friday during the academic year.

Please note that any Special Collections & Archives materials located at the Library Collections Annex (as denoted in the Josiah catalog record) will continue to be available throughout the renovation period. Beginning on Monday, June 24, these materials may be consulted at a temporary reading room at the Annex (10 Park Lane, Providence) by appointment only. Appointments can be made by emailing HayReadingRoom@brown.edu or by calling 401-863-2148. Due to space constraints, researchers are requested to limit appointments to two hours and make them by noon on Friday of the week prior to the requested appointment time.  Confirmation emails will be sent by noon on Sunday. The Annex reading room will be open from 9:30-4:00 Monday through Friday during the Summer and from 9:30-4:30 Monday through Friday during the academic year.

In addition, the Library encourages use of its digitized Signature Collections (selected Special Collections materials that have been digitized for public use) and digital projects during the renovation period.
