Library Basics

Library Hours During the academic year, the Friedman Study Center at the Sciences Library is open 24/5 and only closes at 2 AM - 8 AM Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Rock closes at 2 AM during the week and 10 PM on Friday & Saturday.

Study Spaces The various libraries on campus offer a variety of spaces for different styles of studying.

  • Study Spaces at the Rock:

    Do you want to work in silence? Then head to the Absolute Quiet Room on Level A of the Rock. The Finn Reading Room on Level 1 provides group study rooms & excellent views of downtown Providence. The Rock also offers personal carrels.

  • Study Spaces at the Sci Li:

    The Friedman Study Center provides group work rooms & computers. Looking for a science tutor or a place to work on problem sets with friends? Try the Science Center.

  • Didn't find the type of study space you want? Explore other libraries & RISD Fleet Library to find new spaces to work.

Computing clusters, printing, & scanning: The libraries have Wi-Fi & computing clusters equipped with scanning & printing. The Rock loans laptops. At the beginning of the academic year all undergraduates are given $30 for printing in the computer clusters on their Brown ID. Curious how many computers are available?

Josiah: Josiah is Brown University Library's online catalog of books, journals, videos, audio, & more. Renew materials online using MyJosiah or bring them to a circulation desk. You can browse the library catalog, renew books, and monitor computer cluster availability from your phone using moBUL.

Course Reserves: Required reading, video, & audio materials can be found either online or physically in the libraries.

easyBorrow: This service locates & delivers books that are checked out or not available at Brown. Articles from journals can also be requested using ILLiad.

Researching

Ask A Librarian: Library staff can be contacted using chat, text, email, phone, & in person. These services are available to anyone – chats from parents & prospective students are welcome!  

Resource Guides by Subject & Course: Resource guides have been created to help you start your research & choose from the many resources available to you.

Research Consultations: These face to face sessions with a subject librarian will save you time. Appropriate peer reviewed sources will be given to you & tips to the next step of research will be offered.

Off-Campus Access to Resources: Are you home for Thanksgiving or living off campus & need access to library services?  Don’t worry, use VPN, WebVPN, or EZProxy to access our electronic resources from home.

The Writing Center: Need someone to read over your paper or offer critical writing advice? The Writing Center can help you & improve your writing skills at the same time. Part of the office of the Dean of the College, the center is located on the second floor of J. Walter Wilson.

Citation Management: Use one of our tools for capturing citations & automatically creating footnotes & bibliographies.   

Taking A Break

Do you want to watch a movie? Are you feeling hungry but don't want to move too far?

Friedman DVDs: The Friedman Center has a circulating collection of current & classic movies on DVD.

Library Cafés: Grab a small snack at the Friedman Café or the Rock Café. Only closed container liquids are allowed in the Rock.
