A 2006 reproduction of an 1871 oil on canvas by Richard M. Staigg depicts John Nicholas Brown I (1861-1900). The portrait depicts the head and shoulders view of boy in blue suit with braided lapel and white collared shirt. John Nicholas Brown I was the son of John Carter Brown and Sophia Augusta Browne Brown. He married Natalie Bayard Dresser in 1897. They had one child, John Nicholas Brown (b. 1900).

Written in pencil on the back of the frame: "Mrs. John Nicholas Brown/Harbor Court/Newport R.I." Separate notes tacked to the back of the frame: "Belonging to Mrs. John Carter Brown/357 Benefit Street Providence R.I. & "John Nicholas Brown/Painted at Newport, R.I./by Richard M. Staigg in the Summer of 1871."

The artist Richard M. Staigg (1817-1881) was a North American portrait, miniature, genre and landscape artist. Born in England arrived in the United Stated in 1831 and his family settled in Newport, Rhode Island. He spent the majority of his career in Boston with brief stints in Baltimore and New York in the 1840s and 1850s. He gave up miniature painting in 1862 and spent the rest of his career doing oil and crayon portraits.
