Capt. James H. Whitlock:
Born in Union County, Illinois, in 1828, James Whitlock moved to California in 1850. In 1861 raised Company F of 5th California Volunteer Infantry for the Civil War, and served as its captain, and the unit moved to Arizona in 1862. In 1864 Whitlock joined the Veteran Infantry, California Volunteers, and he commanded For Selden, and was then stationed at Fort Garland in Colorado. He was discharged in 1866 with the rank of major, and he returned to California where he would eventually serve in the state legislature. Whitlock was most noted for numerous engagements against the Chiricahua Apache Indians led by Cochise.
