Description: Encased in a tallcase made of oak and mahogany, with interrupted arch pediment of swan-neck cresting meeting a swan finial, this clock is driven by 2 brass weights with unique star-shaped hands that tell the hour, minute, second and date. In the center of the door and of the lower panel are crust-shaped medallions of bois vert enriched with a burnt shell ornament in the manner of Sheraton. The domed dial is of silvered brass with lunar attachment and semi-circular plates bearing the words, "Time is Valuable". Embedded in scroll spandrels, the chapter ring is engraved with the words, "Rigby, Liverpool."


Provenance: Bought of Wood and Hemmons, Canynge's House, 97 Redcliffe Street, Bristol, England, 1926. Repairs by Breitensein, cleaning by Gilmore. Donated by Jessie Barker and George Warren Gardner, along with house.


Clockmaker biography: Henry Rigby worked in Liverpool at Cable St., then later at John St. until his death in 1787. A watch made by him dated 1781 is part of the Liverpool Museum Collection. [1]
