John Albert Monroe had been a student at Brown for two years prior to joining the Union forces in 1862. He led the first regiment of the Rhode Island light artillery as lieutenant colonel from 1862 until the end of the war.
Artist Herber Cyrus Farnum studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Academie Julian in Paris. He worked primarily in New England.
