Damon, S. Foster

The personal collection of art and popular music for piano of S. Foster Damon (1893-1971), long-time curator of the Harris Collection of Poetry and Plays in the John Hay Library, Brown University. He is primarily responsible for building Brown University 's sheet music collection.

Most of the Damon collection (18 boxes) is filed by composer. One box contains miscellaneous music, and another box contains anthologies filed by country. Much of the music is for solo piano, but there are numerous pieces for piano four hands, for two pianos, and for voice and piano.

Two pieces (To blossoms and A quoi bon entendre) are by Damon, composed in 1913 when he was still in college. There are many works by Debussy, Schubert and Stravinsky, many of which are first published editions for solo piano, and are quite scarce.
