Musical Series (American) |
|
Representative examples of periodicals and bound collections of music published in the mid-1800s, many in New England, especially Boston; but also many published in New York, Philadelphia and elsewhere in the United States. There are two or three issues of periodicals rather than extensive runs, in this subcollection, althought there are several issues of Folio (Boston) published between 1877 and 1886, Kunkel's musical review (1892-1897), and Musical repository (Nos. 1 - 14, 16). Additionally, there are collections of piano music (Finlayson's selection of Scottish songs and dances, no. 1 ; Himan's piano library, vol. 1 no. 1, n.d.; and Lady's musical library, 1842 (this is a hybrid series publication of collections - have vol. I, nos, 5, 8, 10, 12 [1842], vol. II, bound, missing pp 37-40 [1843], and many more loose selections, some from vol. III [Jan. 1844]. ). There are also other half-dime and dime series (DeWitt's, Munro's]. Although most of the music is for piano, several publications were for choir leaders (Choir herald, The choir journal, Choir leader, Lyra Catholica). |
