Her research led her to Dr. James Green&#8217;s work and Marcos&#8217; story, which inspired this poem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">For Marcos Arruda upon Reading A Mother\u2019s Cry<br \/>\nJuly 2013<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina: Afternoon thunderheads cluster<br \/>\nwaiting to release their floods.<br \/>\nAgainst the whiteness twin military jets soar<br \/>\nabove the swooping cardinals.<br \/>\nAre they heading to the base<br \/>\nwhere we trained those who tortured you?<\/p>\n<p>Washington D.C.: You fled here half-dead,<br \/>\na student visa your only shield<br \/>\nagainst machine guns.<br \/>\nYears you struggled to stay<br \/>\ntoiling like Sisyphus<br \/>\nin a nation too distracted to care.<\/p>\n<p>You found America\u2019s beauty soft.<br \/>\nWas it softness that made our officials<br \/>\nShrug at the news<br \/>\nof the priest with his face shot away,<br \/>\nlaugh at the photo<br \/>\nof the man on the parrot\u2019s perch,<br \/>\nignore the memo about the girl<br \/>\nsuspended like that<br \/>\n43 hours<br \/>\nwith no food or water?<\/p>\n<p>Forty-odd years ago<br \/>\nyou stood where I do, holding signs.<br \/>\n\u201cStop U.S. Aid to Brazil\u2019s Dictatorship.\u201d<br \/>\nThey blocked you<br \/>\nso Nixon could take tea with M\u00e9dici,<br \/>\n\u201cThe Monster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Standing at the Vietnam Memorial<br \/>\nI read names of the dead.<br \/>\nI think<br \/>\nthey left some out.<br \/>\nNames of idealistic boys<br \/>\nbodies lashed to poles like wounded deer<br \/>\nscreams drowning out the sizzle<br \/>\nof Army-issue generators,<br \/>\ntales of their last hours buried with their corpses<br \/>\nin the hills of Andorinha, Araguaia&#8211;<br \/>\nmute witnesses<br \/>\nto Brazil\u2019s pact with the Devil<br \/>\nblessed by U.S. dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Your mother\u2019s cry has become my own.<br \/>\nAs thunderheads surge over the Capitol<br \/>\nhow I wish like them<br \/>\nto release the torrents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kathy Swart is a librarian and writer who enjoys studying Brazil&#8217;s language, music, and dance.
