In the post-WWII era, <\/strong>Brazil witnessed a substantial expansion in gay culture, particularly in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and S\u00e3o Paulo. Indicative of such expansion was the development of several gay publications, the first of which being O Snob\u00a0<\/em>(The Snob), a newsletter composed by the members of a turma\u00a0<\/em>of Northeasterners in Rio.\u00a0Between 1963 and 1969,\u00a0the\u00a0turma\u00a0<\/em>published one-hundred issues of the gay newsletter, which usually featured gossip columns, interviews with drag stars, and elaborate illustrations.<\/p>\n

O Snob <\/em>inspired<\/strong> over thirty similar publications across the country. The publications represented the development of concrete gay subcultures and their members’ desires to document and disseminate their experiences and beliefs.<\/p>\n
