Lusophone Africa

Lusophone Africa Collection (Portuguese Africa Collection)

The collection (c, 125 items) contains various types of publications about the Guerras de Libertação (Wars of Liberation) as known as the Angolan, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambican Wars of Independence.

The collection is comprised, in large part, of pamphlets published by African opposition movements to Portuguese colonial rule, such as the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), as well as by solidarity organizations throughout the English-speaking world, such as the Liberation Support Movement and the World Council of Churches. Additionally, a number of books and serial publications included in the collection document Portuguese expansion in Africa in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, as well as post-independence social and economic conditions.
