Micoleau, Associate Professor of Romance Languages, was the one faculty member to die in the war. Lieutenant Micoleau&nbsp;was killed in action at the first battle of the Marne on September, 9th, 1914.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/floss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/06\/Faunce_Price-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Faunce_Price\" class=\"wp-image-787\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/floss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Floss: A Brown Highlander<\/a>: Florence J. H. Price, 1906, was the first graduate of the University to die in the war. Price was a prominent athlete while at Brown. In 1915, he joined the Canadian Highlanders. By 1918 Brown had adopted a policy of &#8220;Aggressive Adaptation&#8221; and on October 1st, 1918, the 275 students registered members&nbsp;of the Student Army Training Corps and the Brown University Naval Unit were inducted into National Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/06\/REMY-convoy-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1905\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/06\/REMY-convoy-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Brown ambulances\" class=\"wp-image-1905\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/brown-ambulances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brown Ambulances<\/a><strong>: <\/strong>The University&#8217;s first major contribution to the war effort was the sponsorship of&nbsp;three ambulances sent to France. The first had <em>Brown University<\/em> inscribed on the side panels. The second and third were named in honor of Professor Henri F. Micoleau and Florence J. H. Price, class of 1906.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/faculty-gardens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/06\/faculty_gardens_2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"faculty_gardens_2\" class=\"wp-image-804\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/faculty-gardens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty War Gardens:<\/a> In the spring and summer of 1917 and 1918, members of the Brown faculty contributed to the nation&#8217;s food conservation efforts by cultivating 7 acres of land near Andrews field. Lessons on canning and food conservation were taught in the Summer Biological Laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/a-changed-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/06\/manning_exterior_detail-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"manning_exterior_detail\" class=\"wp-image-501\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/a-changed-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Changed Campus<\/a>: During the war, Brown University effectively became a military training camp for the Government. Dormitories became barracks, the Union became a mess hall, Rhode Island Hall was headquarters for the Student Army Training Corps. Manning Hall was headquarters for Brown&#8217;s Naval Training with a canon&nbsp;and&nbsp;two machine guns out front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/the-womens-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/06\/KIC-Image-0002-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"KIC Image 0002\" class=\"wp-image-826\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/the-womens-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Women&#8217;s College Does its Bit<\/a>: Students from the Women&#8217;s College contributed to the war effort a in a variety of ways. The women&nbsp;knitted sweaters and socks, sewed bandages, canned fruits and vegetables, worked for the Red Cross, and raised funds for alumni going overseas for war work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/letters-from-over-there-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/07\/Gare_du_lest_2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Gare_du_l'est_2\" class=\"wp-image-1814\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/letters-from-over-there-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Letters from Over There<\/a>: Correspondence from Brown&#8217;s servicemen was carefully preserved by the War Works Committee. Letters and postcards written by 274 Brown University students, alumni, and faculty that served in the war comprise the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riamco.org\/render.php?eadid=US-RPB-ms-1e-3&amp;view=scope\">World War I Correspondence collection<\/a>. Later, thirty-six&nbsp;Brown men enlisted in Brown&#8217;s Ambulance Unit; the first unit of the Medical Enlisted Reserve Corps. The men sailed to Genoa and traveled overland to France. After the armistice, fifteen&nbsp;members of Brown&#8217;s Unit were awarded the <em>Croce al Merito di Guerra<\/em> for brave and faithful service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/influenza-quarantine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/07\/quarantine_2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"quarantine_2\" class=\"wp-image-2957\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/influenza-quarantine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Influenza and Quarantine<\/a>: Shortly after the University opened in the fall of 1918, the influenza pandemic arrived in Providence. The University quickly made plans to memorialize those who died during their war service, whether they lost their lives on the front lines or from the deadly influenza virus.
