Images of Brown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As the centennial anniversary of America&#8217;s entry into World War I approaches, it feels timely to present a project that illuminates the social landscape of the Brown University campus during the turbulent years of the war, and draws attention to the service and sacrifice of members of the Brown community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summer of 1919, prior to the construction of the Soldiers Memorial Gate, the&nbsp;University published a 74 page booklet, <a href=\"http:\/\/babel.hathitrust.org\/cgi\/pt?id=hvd.hn57d3;view=1up;seq=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brown University in the War<\/a>. The publication features&nbsp;biographies of Brown men who died in the World War I, and a directory of the military service of the 1,974 alumni, former students and undergraduates who served.&nbsp;The memorial booklet was used as a&nbsp;starting point for this project, which explores Brown at a time when<em>&nbsp;&#8220;the University became simply a training school for the Army and Navy<\/em>.&#8221;<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000217e10d50000000048186dbb_7\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000217e10d50000000048186dbb_7-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000217e10d50000000048186dbb_7-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">1. Providence, RI. 1919. pg5<\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourteen&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/browninthegreatwar\/stories\/\">stories<\/a> that comprise this project serve as possible jumping off points for further research. The stories feature digital images from primary and secondary resources and&nbsp;highlight related materials from Brown&#8217;s Digital Repository, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.services.brown.edu\/studio\/collections\/id_618\/?q=World+War+I+1914-1918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World War I Poetry<\/a> from the Harris Broadsides Collection, <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.brown.edu\/studio\/collections\/id_582\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World War I Sheet Music<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.brown.edu\/studio\/collections\/id_619\/?q=World+War+I+1914-1918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prints, Drawings, and Watercolors from the Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.brown.edu\/studio\/collections\/id_566\/\">Images of Brown<\/a>.
