Peckham\u2019s paintings remind us of the beauty and fragility of the natural landscape. Bailey\u2019s notes convey the diversity of a distinct but steadily shrinking ecology amid growing urban sprawl. Together, they help us construct a more complete picture of the city we share and how it came to be.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Lysimachia quadrifolia <\/em><\/strong><strong>L. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/repository.library.brown.edu\/studio\/item\/bdr:744043\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-76 size-full\" style=\"width: 33%\" src=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/catswamp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2018\/12\/Lysimachia_quadrifolia-nbc.jpg\" alt=\"Lysimachia quadrifolia specimen\" width=\"841\" height=\"1188\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><strong>whorled yellow-loosestrife, Myrsinaceae (marlberry family)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Found throughout New England, except for the far northern areas, and across northeastern parts of the United States and south to Georgia and Alabama. Whorled yellow loosestrife grows in meadows and woodlands and the edges of wetlands. This species was used by Native Americans to treat kidney and urinary tract problems.<\/p>\n<p>The genus name, <em>Lysimachia<\/em>, derives from Lysimachus (361\u2013281 BCE), the king of Thrace (southeastern Europe).
