Whether functional or cosmetic, concern for and care of teeth have long been a part of the human condition. Written accounts of dental practices and practitioners can be found in numerous cultures around the globe as early as 5000 BC, and the first identified book on the subject was published in 1530. The era of \u201cmodern\u201d dentistry is marked by the publication of Le Chirurgien Dentiste<\/em> (The Surgeon Dentist, A Treatise on Teeth<\/em>) by French surgeon Pierre Fauchard in 1723.
