Her research addresses literary criticism, race and gender; linguistics; the African diaspora; Black culture; and sexuality. She is best known for her 1987 article, &#8220;Mama&#8217;s Baby, Papa&#8217;s Maybe: An American Grammar Book,&#8221; one of the most cited essays in African-American literary studies today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hortense J.\u00a0Spillers\u00a0papers include handwritten diaries and journals on topics ranging from critical race theory and\u00a0<em>Moby Dick<\/em>\u00a0to the assassination of Robert Kennedy and\u00a0Spillers\u2019 first trip abroad in 1968. The collection also includes personal and professional correspondence with scholars such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Gayatri Spivak; and drafts of her talks, articles, and books, including \u201cIsom,\u201d \u201cConjuring,\u201d and \u201cMama\u2019s Baby, Papa\u2019s Maybe.\u201d Materials in this collection date from 1966 to 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spillers&nbsp;contributed her papers to the Feminist Theory Archive in the name of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/research\/pembroke-center\/black-feminist-theory-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black Feminist Theory Project<\/a>, established by the Pembroke Center in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For information on how to access these collections, please contact the Pembroke Center Archivist at&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:pembroke_archives@brown.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pembroke_archives@brown.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pembroke Center\u2019s\u00a0Feminist Theory Archive\u00a0and the\u00a0John Hay Library are proud to announce that the\u00a0Hortense J.\u00a0Spillers\u00a0papers\u00a0are open for research.
