The collection represents the world throughout the time these maps were collected by Brown University. Two-thirds of the maps are from the 1800s and early 1900s, with a major focus on the United States and Europe. The local collection for southern New England is also noteworthy. Some of the more exceptional maps are a Nazi tourism map, a map cited by Herman Melville in writing Moby Dick, and an anti-slavery map donated to the Library by the family of an abolitionist who graduated from Brown in 1831.
This historic maps collection is featured in a February 13 Providence Journal article — “The course of history – Brown’s rediscovered maps tell tale”.
John Hay Library hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
For further information contact Thomas_Stieve@brown.edu

The Friends of the Library cordially invite you to a talk on the Rediscovered Map Collection of the John Hay Library By Thomas Stieve, Social Sciences Data Librarian, Brown University Thursday, April 5, 2007 7 p.m., Lownes Room, John Hay Library A selection of rediscovered historical maps, including many local maps, will be discussed and … Rediscovered Map Collection of the John Hay Library — Talk and Exhibit

[5

post-124","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-exhibits-events
["GET
