Many thanks to everyone who contributed!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations to Penina Posner, Senior Library Specialist &#8211; Gateway Services, for coming closest to guessing how many books we donated in a Library staff contest. Penina won a tote bag full of Library swag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of books in the home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having access to books in the home is documented to have long-ranging, positive effects. A 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0049089X18300607?via%3Dihub#sec5\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0049089X18300607?via%3Dihub#sec5\">study<\/a> published in <em>Social Science Research<\/em> demonstrated &#8220;that adolescent exposure to books is an integral part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/social-practice\">social practices<\/a>&nbsp;that foster long term cognitive competencies spanning literacy, numeracy and ICT [information and communication technologies] skills,&#8221; and that &#8220;growing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in these areas beyond the benefits accrued from parental education or own educational or occupational attainment.&#8221; The number of books in the home associated with significant literacy gains is between 80 &#8211; 350. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Books&nbsp;Are Wings works with students around the state of Rhode Island with a focus on communities where&nbsp;children&nbsp;often do not have their own&nbsp;books&nbsp;at home.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where and when to donate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Please bring your donation to the lobby of the Rockefeller Library, 10 Prospect St., and place them in the bin next to the reader services desk or on the book truck under the large monitor on the wall. Donations will be accepted&nbsp;<strong>until Friday, December 15.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Want to contribute but don&#8217;t have&nbsp;children&#8217;s&nbsp;books&nbsp;at home?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can make a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crm.bloomerang.co\/HostedDonation?ApiKey=pub_e4eaaf14-e97f-11e6-bb7f-024e165d44b3&amp;WidgetId=2657280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monetary donation<\/a>&nbsp;or make a purchase from the organization&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/hz\/wishlist\/ls\/3D63QAANUJ5D7\/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon wish list<\/a>, either on Amazon or at a local independent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newenglandbooks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bookseller<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things to consider when donating books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Children&#8217;s&nbsp;books&nbsp;only<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Books Are Wings accepts baby&nbsp;books&nbsp;through fifth grade level&nbsp;books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Condition is important<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Please no&nbsp;books&nbsp;with mildew, old library&nbsp;books,&nbsp;or damaged&nbsp;books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Content is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Books in different languages and\/or about BIPOC characters are in demand.
