Through a linguistic, musical, and visual examination of two documents from Brown Library\u2019s special collections, the so-named 1907 \u201cChinese Hymnal\u201d compiled by American missionaries, and a Chinese artist\u2019s 1871 illustrated rendition of English Puritan John Bunyan\u2019s 17th-century novel&nbsp;<em>The Pilgrim\u2019s Progress<\/em>, Zoe Yu \u201927 sheds light on the endeavors of missionaries, musicians, and artists to sinicize Christianity and navigate linguistic and ideological barriers in promoting national salvation during the tumultuous late Qing Dynasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jared Ong \u201925<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Tale of Two Travelers: Imperial China Through Travel Literature in the&nbsp;Late Qing Dynasty<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2024\/04\/Ong-Jared-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2024\/04\/Ong-Jared-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2024\/04\/Ong-Jared-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2024\/04\/Ong-Jared-2.jpg 959w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This study compares two travelogues in Brown University\u2019s Gardner Collection \u2014 \u9d3b\u96ea\u56e0\u7de3\u5716\u8a18&nbsp;<em>(A&nbsp;Wild Swan\u2019s Trail: The Travels of a Mandarin)<\/em>&nbsp;by Lin Qing in 1849, and \u5510\u571f\u540d\u52dd\u5716\u6703 <em>(Famous Sights of the Chinese Land)<\/em>&nbsp;by Okada Gyokuzan in 1805 \u2014&nbsp;and examines the contrasting visions of China in late imperial China from Chinese and Japanese perspectives. Through the mapping and analysis of depicted scenes in both sources and a comparative analysis of their provenance, we uncover not only a vibrant tapestry of Chinese life, but also these two travelers&#8217; perspectives on the final vestiges of the last imperial dynasty of China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gardner Fellowship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 2023, the Gardner Fellowship encourages Brown students in all disciplines to venture beyond traditional academic boundaries to explore, interpret, and integrate these unique materials into contemporary scholarship and discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event is a testament to the creativity and scholarly dedication of the fellows, supported by the Brown University Library.
