Donations will be accepted\u00a0<strong>until Wednesday, December 18.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Want to contribute but don\u2019t have&nbsp;children\u2019s&nbsp;books&nbsp;at home?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can make a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crm.bloomerang.co\/HostedDonation?ApiKey=pub_e4eaaf14-e97f-11e6-bb7f-024e165d44b3&amp;WidgetId=13347840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monetary donation<\/a> or purchase new books from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/hz\/wishlist\/ls\/JVEDY9GD1PG1\/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Books Are Wings&#8217; Amazon wishlist<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of books in the home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having access to books in the home is documented to have long-ranging, positive effects. A 2018&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0049089X18300607?via%3Dihub#sec5\">study<\/a>&nbsp;published in&nbsp;<em>Social Science Research<\/em>&nbsp;demonstrated \u201cthat adolescent exposure to books is an integral part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/social-practice\">social practices<\/a>&nbsp;that foster long term cognitive competencies spanning literacy, numeracy and ICT [information and communication technologies] skills,\u201d and that \u201cgrowing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in these areas beyond the benefits accrued from parental education or own educational or occupational attainment.\u201d The number of books in the home associated with significant literacy gains is between 80 \u2013 350.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Books\u00a0Are Wings works with students around the state of Rhode Island with a focus on communities where\u00a0children\u00a0often do not have their own\u00a0books\u00a0at home.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things to consider when donating books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Children\u2019s&nbsp;books&nbsp;only<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Books Are Wings accepts <strong>baby\u00a0books\u00a0through fifth grade<\/strong> level\u00a0books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Condition is important<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Please no&nbsp;books&nbsp;with mildew, old library&nbsp;books,&nbsp;or damaged&nbsp;books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Content is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Books in different languages and\/or about BIPOC characters are in demand.
