For the fourth year, the Library is hosting a campus-wide drive to collect\u00a0children\u2019s\u00a0books\u00a0for donation to Pawtucket, RI-based organization\u00a0Books\u00a0Are Wings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Last year we collected 758 books for Rhode Island children! <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Where and when to donate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Please bring your donation to the lobby of the Rockefeller Library<\/strong>, 10 Prospect St., and place them on the book truck under the large monitor on the wall. Donations will be accepted\u00a0until Wednesday, December 18.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Want to contribute but don\u2019t have children\u2019s books at home?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can make a\u00a0monetary donation<\/a> or purchase new books from Books Are Wings’ Amazon wishlist<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benefits of books in the home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having access to books in the home is documented to have long-ranging, positive effects. A 2018 study<\/a> published in Social Science Research<\/em> demonstrated \u201cthat adolescent exposure to books is an integral part of social practices<\/a> that foster long term cognitive competencies spanning literacy, numeracy and ICT [information and communication technologies] skills,\u201d and that \u201cgrowing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in these areas beyond the benefits accrued from parental education or own educational or occupational attainment.\u201d The number of books in the home associated with significant literacy gains is between 80 \u2013 350.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Books\u00a0Are Wings works with students around the state of Rhode Island with a focus on communities where\u00a0children\u00a0often do not have their own\u00a0books\u00a0at home.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things to consider when donating books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Children\u2019s books only<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Books Are Wings accepts baby\u00a0books\u00a0through fifth grade<\/strong> level\u00a0books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Condition is important<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Please no books with mildew, old library books, or damaged books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Content is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Books in different languages and\/or about BIPOC characters are in demand. They provide children with the opportunity to select books that are representative of them and that are historically accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
