On October 3rd, at 5 p.m., Mr. Rappeleye\u00a0will give a lecture titled &#8220;Past &amp; Present&#8221; where he\u00a0will discuss a variety of topics including\u2014what he learned\u00a0while writing <em>Sons of Providence<\/em>, how it changed his thinking about Brown University\u00a0and early New England, and what it means to be an American both in the present and in the late 1700&#8217;s. The talk will be in Salomon\u00a0on the Main Green.<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t make it to the talk you can watch it online. It will be streamed live on the <a href=\"http:\/\/brown.edu\/web\/livestream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brown live stream page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The talk will be of interest to many first-year students who read\u00a0<em>Sons of Providence <\/em>as part of the First Readings program.\u00a0First Readings is Brown\u2019s summer reading project for all new students. Now in its sixth year, the program provides first-year and transfer students with a common reading experience that introduces them to the University and to the pleasures and rigors of undergraduate academic life.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Rappleye\u00a0was an award-winning investigative journalist and editor. He lives in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Also of note, this is the last week to see the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/libnews\/rhode-island-slavery-and-the-university\/\">Rhode Island Slavery and the University<\/a> <\/em>exhibit at the John Hay Library which was created in support of the <em>Sons of Providence <\/em>and the First Readings program.<\/p>\n<p>Both events are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Rappleye is the author of Sons of Providence.
