\"\"<\/a>PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0 On October 11, 2012, Chinese Author Mo Yan was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. In celebration of Mo Yan’s award, Brown University Library’s East Asian Curator, Li Wang, selected a number of Mo Yan\u2019s works in Chinese and English translation for display in the Gardner Room (room 311) on the third floor of the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library.<\/p>\n

Born in 1955 in a farmer\u2019s family in Shandong province, Mo Yan (pseudonym of Guan Moye) wrote more than 30 novels and other books.\u00a0 One of his best known novels, \u201cRed Sorghum\u201d (VHS copy available in the Library) was revised as a reward-winning movie in 1987, directed by Zhang Yimou.\u00a0 A number of Mo Yan\u2019s books have been translated into English, French, Spanish, German, and Swedish.<\/p>\n

The Brown University Library’s English titles include Red Sorghum: A Novel of China <\/em>(1993), The Garlic Ballads<\/em> (1995), The Republic of Wine: A Novel<\/em> (2000), Do Anything for A Laugh<\/em> (2001), Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out: A Novel<\/em> (2008).\u00a0 The exhibit also features the Chinese works: Shifu, You’ll Shisan bu<\/em> (\u5341\u4e09\u6b65) (\u201cThirteen Steps\u201d, 1989), Fengru feitun<\/em> (\u4e30\u4e73\u80a5\u81c0) (\u201cBig Breasts and Wide Hips\u201d, 1996), Tanxiang xing<\/em> (\u6a80\u9999\u5211) (\u201cSandalwood Death\u201d<\/em>, 2001), Muzhi kao<\/em> (\u62c7\u6307\u94d0) (\u201cThumb-cuffs\u201d, 2008), and Wa <\/em>(\u86d9) (\u201cFrog\u201d, 2009). Several English books that contain selected works by Mo Yan, and posters from the movie \u201cRed Sorghum\u201d in the magazine \u201cPopular Cinema,\u201d are also on display.<\/p>\n

More works by Mo Yan will be added. The display is on view through October 19, between 9am and 5pm.<\/p>\n
