Many groups find themselves using the Library over the summer months including: pre-college students, undergraduates, and high school students.\u00a0The\u00a0summer is\u00a0also a time for\u00a0renovation and an opportunity to install\u00a0new technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a brief look at some of the groups passing through the Library as well as a few of the summer activities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brown.edu\/ce\/pre-college\/pre-college-courses.php\">Summer Pre-College Students<\/a><\/strong>: This summer Brown is offering\u00a0over\u00a0200 courses selected to reflect the University\u2019s curriculum. It isn&#8217;t long\u00a0after these classes start that pre-college students find themselves in the Library.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brown.edu\/scs\/undergrad\/summer\/\">Undergraduate Summer Session<\/a><\/strong>: About 450 students enroll in summer session classes at Brown each year. Subject Librarians have remained busy meeting one-on-one with a number of undergraduates.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brown.edu\/academics\/education\/brown-summer-high-school\/brown-summer-high-school\">Brown Summer High School Program<\/a><\/strong>: Now in its 46th year\u2014the Brown Summer High School is a daytime program open to Providence-area high school students. Instructors from this program can often be found in the Rock Lobby tutoring students.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/libnews\/rockreadingroomreno\/\">Renovations<\/a><\/strong>: The University Library is renovating both the Rockefeller Library and the John Hay Library. In the Rockefeller Library, the first floor computer cluster, Reference Room, and Hecker Center will be\u00a0renovated. The\u00a0John Hay Library is finishing up a year-long renovation of the entire building.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/libnews\/new-bookeye-4-scanning-station-in-the-rock\/\">New Technology<\/a><\/strong>: In response to faculty requests, the Library recently acquired a \u201cBookeye 4\u201d scanning station for users to easily scan books and other materials. As part of the Hecker Center renovation, a new laptop loaner cart will be added.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Summer Activities<\/strong><b>: <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Thesis writing<\/i>: Many current students\u2014both undergraduates and grad students\u2014use the summer as an opportunity to work\u00a0on their thesis.<\/li>\n<li><i>Professional development<\/i>: Librarians and staff are busy attending\u00a0conferences and continuing their research.<\/li>\n<li><i>Student workers: <\/i>A number of student workers have been hired to help with shelving and the digitization of materials during\u00a0the summer months.<\/li>\n<li><i><i>First Readings: <\/i><\/i>In partnership with the Dean of the College, the Library created the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/firstreading2014\/\">First Readings<\/a>\u00a0website to introduce incoming students to the Brown community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some might view the summer as a slow time on a college campus, but the Brown University Library remains committed to supporting users.
