On Wednesday, October 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Lownes Room of the John Hay Library, you will have the chance to learn more about Brown\u2019s most illustrious alumnus, a poet and diplomat who served three presidents\u2014two of them as Secretary of State. Two authors, John Taliaferro and Joshua Zeitz AM\u201998, PhD\u201902, will discuss and sign their recent books about Hay, which will be available for purchase on site. Associate Professor of History Michael Vorenberg will introduce the speakers. A Q&amp;A and reception will follow the talk. This event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Taliaferro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/libnews\/files\/2014\/09\/Taliaferro-1132-_8X12.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6720 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/libnews\/files\/2014\/09\/Taliaferro-1132-_8X12-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Taliaferro-1132 _8X12\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>John Taliaferro is a graduate of Harvard College and a former senior editor at <em>Newsweek<\/em>. He is the author of four previous books:\u00a0<em>Charles M. He is the author of several books on American political and social history and has written for the<em>\u00a0New York\u00a0Times<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Washington<\/em>\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>,\u00a0<em>LA<\/em>\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>, <em>Smithsonian Magazine, The New Republic<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Atlantic<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Dissent<\/em>,\u00a0<em>American Heritage<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Mother Jones<\/em>. Josh also appeared as a commentator on two PBS documentaries: <em>Boomer Century<\/em>, and Ken Burns&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Prohibition.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A former gubernatorial speechwriter and policy aide, Josh\u00a0earned his B.A. with highest honors at Swarthmore College and his Ph.D. in American History at Brown University. He lives in Hoboken and Ocean Grove, New Jersey with his wife, Angela Zeitz, an artist, and their two daughters.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lincoln\u2019s Boys: John Hay, John Nicolay, and the War for Lincoln\u2019s Image<\/em> by Zeitz is a timely and intimate look into Lincoln\u2019s White House through the lives of his two closest aides and confidantes.
