Sharpe on Prospect Street in Providence. Twenty-eight members were present as Chairman Carlton Morse gave an outline of the Friends of the Library movement at other institutions, beginning with the Bodleian Library at Oxford in 1925. It was the stated hope for our Friends\u00a0that the group members\u00a0\u201cwill get abundant pleasure from affiliation, that each man will find what he most enjoys, and that a wise and useful influence will thus strengthen the Library.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In honor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/united\/events_conferences\/folweek\">National Friends of the Library Week<\/a>, October 19 \u2013 25, 2014, we are sharing a timeline of noted accomplishments. Seventy-six years after the group\u2019s founding, the relationship between the Friends and the Library remains one of fruitful collaboration, as illustrated by the history, and it has indeed provided abundant pleasure through affiliation and strengthened the Library.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 1984<br \/>\n<\/strong>A major expansion of Friends of the Library membership begins. A Friends coordinator is\u00a0appointed for the first time and physical space for the Friends is\u00a0established in the John Hay Library. A seed gift from the Joukowsky family is\u00a0given to reorganize and revitalize the Friends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 1985<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Friends celebrate the 75<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of the John Hay Library.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 1987<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Friends begin\u00a0creating and selling holiday cards.<\/p>\n<p>The Library celebrates acquisition of its two millionth book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 1988<br \/>\n<\/strong>The first William B. Williams Awards, established by the Library and the Friends board of directors, are\u00a0given to seven individuals who had displayed \u201cbroadly based, multi-faceted support to the University Library over a long period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 1991<br \/>\n<\/strong>Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns delivers the annual William B. Williams Lecture. The title of his talk, &#8220;Mystic Chords of Memory,&#8221; is from Lincoln&#8217;s first inaugural address.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 1992<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>The Carberry Cookbook\u00a0<\/em>debuts on Carberry Day, November 13, 1992.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 1993<br \/>\n<\/strong>Friends member Daniel Siegel \u201957 donates the original handwritten manuscript of George Orwell\u2019s <em>1984<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 1994<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Friends sell\u00a0\u201cHunks of the Hay\u201d when the John Hay Library steps are\u00a0replaced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 2004<br \/>\n<\/strong>On February 13, 2004 at Ladd Observatory, Josiah Carberry is\u00a0honored with his own star and guests celebrate Carberry Day while awaiting arrival of the elusive professor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 2005<br \/>\n<\/strong>Sophie Blistein \u201841 steps down as Membership Chair after growing the Friends membership from a few hundred to over 1,000 members.<\/p>\n<p>Rhode Island Coalition of Library Advocates presents the William E. Reeves Friends Recognition Award to Brown\u2019s Friends of the Library. This is\u00a0the first time an academic library friends group is given\u00a0this award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer 2010<br \/>\n<\/strong>FOL Board Member Thomas Bryson \u201872 and his wife, Antonia Bryson \u201874, donate their remarkable collection of books, photographs, programs, and ephemera relating to the history of dance to Brown University Library.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 2013<br \/>\n<\/strong>Friends of the Library celebrate its 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 2014<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Library and the Friends host the inaugural presentations of the Harris Collection Literary Award to author George R. R.
