{"id":7334,"date":"2012-04-05T12:11:46","date_gmt":"2012-04-05T16:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/bulspecialcollections\/?p=638"},"modified":"2012-04-05T12:11:46","modified_gmt":"2012-04-05T16:11:46","slug":"638-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/638-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Itinerant Actor"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_641\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-641\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/bulspecialcollections\/files\/2012\/04\/Scribner-portrait-75-dpi1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-641\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/bulspecialcollections\/files\/2012\/04\/Scribner-portrait-75-dpi1-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-641\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edwin Scribner, c.1908<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The papers of playwright <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.lib.brown.edu\/riamco\/render.php?eadid=US-RPB-ms2012.005&amp;view=title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edwin Scribner (Ms.2012.005)<\/a> arrived recently to complement a large collection of his published plays in the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/collatoz\/info.php?id=41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Edwin Scribner was born in Logansport, IN in 1879.\u00a0 On 27 July 1898, he quit his job in the Master Mechanics office of the Pan Handle Railroad in Logansport and, as he states in the first volume of his diary, &#8220;From that date the theater has been my interest and occupation in life.\u201d He was an itinerant actor and a playwright, writing at least 50 plays. \u00a0He died in Waterville, ME in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>His papers contain 18 typescripts for his unpublished plays which complement the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/find\/Author\/Home?author=Scribner%2C%20Edwin)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">33 published plays<\/a> already owned by Brown.\u00a0 Of particular interest is the diary he kept \u00a0from 1898-1921 which provides an intimate view into the life of a traveling theater troupe actor.\u00a0 It was not meant as a place to bear his soul but rather as a record of his work.\u00a0 And work he did.\u00a0 Every page documents the unrelenting travel schedule of an itinerant actor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_643\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-643\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/bulspecialcollections\/files\/2012\/04\/Scrinber-diary-75dpi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-643 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/bulspecialcollections\/files\/2012\/04\/Scrinber-diary-75dpi-300x255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-643\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diary of Edwin Scribner, Oct 4-Nov 3, 1900<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the fall of 1900, from September 19 to December 15 (88 days) he visited 77 cities and gave 79 performances.\u00a0 The tour ended on December 15 this way: \u201cBefore meeting our leading man John Fry Palmer, drunk picked a fight with Griffith \u2013 which got him a good licking and landed him in jail.\u00a0 Closed with John Griffith Co. \u2013 they beat me out of my last weeks salary.\u201d\u00a0 Two days later Edwin was working for another theater troupe in yet another city and so it went for the next 20 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The papers of playwright Edwin Scribner (Ms.2012.005) arrived recently to complement a large collection of his published plays in the Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays.
