This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the talk.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tara Nummedal and Donna Bilak: \u201cTear the Books Apart: Atalanta fugiens in a Digital Age\u201d\" width=\"1778\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ijphGB0kqb8?list=PL2PwShbFBf4C1bxfcCRsYTbJtgaA7igH-\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Recently chosen as one of two pilot projects for Brown&#8217;s Mellon-funded digital publishing initiative, Nummedal and Bilak&#8217;s publication\u00a0will bring a multimedia seventeenth century text to life in digital form. The digital publication will produce a dynamic, enhanced digital edition of Michael Maier\u2019s extraordinary text,\u00a0<em>Atalanta fugiens\u00a0<\/em>(1617\/18). An alchemical emblem book, Maier\u2019s\u00a0<em>Atalanta fugiens\u00a0<\/em>re-casts the myth of Atalanta\u2014the fleet-footed virgin\u2014as a series of fifty emblems that outline the creation of the philosopher\u2019s stone. She is the author of\u00a0<em>Alchemy and Authority in the Holy Roman Empire\u00a0<\/em>and is currently completing her second book, &#8220;The Lion\u2019s Blood: Alchemy, Gender, and Apocalypse in Reformation Germany.&#8221;\u00a0Her work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and, most recently, the\u00a0John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. She is Past President of the New England Renaissance Conference and a member of the editorial board of the journal\u00a0<em>Ambix<\/em>. Her research interests encompass early modern European history of science and alchemy, early modern emblem culture, as well as 19th-century jewelry history and technology. Dr. Bilak&#8217;s doctoral research reconstructed the life and times of a 17th-century Puritan alchemist who operated in England and America, and she was the 2013-14 Edelstein Postdoctoral Fellow at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia where her research focused on analysis of the\u00a0<em>Atalanta fugiens<\/em>(1618), an alchemical emblem book that encodes laboratory technologies using music and images.
