{"id":8574,"date":"2016-06-06T10:00:26","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/libnews\/?p=8574"},"modified":"2016-06-06T10:00:26","modified_gmt":"2016-06-06T14:00:26","slug":"jhl-conservation-bulletin-june-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/jhl-conservation-bulletin-june-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"JHL Conservation Bulletin | June 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A quarterly installment highlighting Library Conservation in the Brown University community, conservation news around the internet, and ways for you to connect with conservation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Book and paper conservation at Brown<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Located in the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/hay\/index.php\">John Hay Library<\/a>, Brown University Library\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/preservation\/cons.php\">conservation lab<\/a> mixes historical tools such as 19<sup>th<\/sup> century cast iron book presses and board shears with 21<sup>st<\/sup> century conveniences and innovations like a variable speed control HEPA vacuum cleaner and a deionized water filtration system. This amalgam of old and new allows the conservator to address collection needs such as: repair and other physical treatments, environmental monitoring, object handling, exhibition, storage, research, and education.<\/p>\n<p><u>In house treatment at the Hay<\/u><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8583\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8583\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8583 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2016\/05\/JHL-01-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Before Treatment\/ After Treatment\" width=\"584\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2016\/05\/JHL-01-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2016\/05\/JHL-01-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Before Treatment\/ After Treatment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/josiah.brown.edu\/record=b1842762~S7\">1841 pamphlet<\/a> used in a class last fall had suffered tears, losses, and staining to the paper support since its creation, and had been <a href=\"http:\/\/cool.conservation-us.org\/don\/dt\/dt2412.html\">over-sewn<\/a> in a manner that made opening the already fragile pages even more hazardous. The pamphlet was disbound, the paper support treated and repaired, making new <a href=\"http:\/\/cool.conservation-us.org\/don\/dt\/dt1501.html\">gatherings<\/a> that were sewn through the fold and cased into a new <a href=\"http:\/\/cool.conservation-us.org\/coolaic\/sg\/bpg\/annual\/v14\/bp14-06.html\">lapped component binding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><u>Find conservation online and in person<\/u><\/p>\n<p>This year marks the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.umich.edu\/flood-florence-1966-fifty-year-retrospective\">50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Florence Flood;<\/a> the disaster that revolutionized conservation and preservation in libraries and museums around the world. If you are attending ALA in Orlando, you will have <a href=\"http:\/\/2016.alaannual.org\/now-showing-ala-film-program-0\">a chance to view<\/a> the new digital restoration of the rare Franco Zeffirelli film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/preservation\/outreach\/workshops\/public\/2016PW.html\">Florence: Days of Destruction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just because a thing is old doesn&#8217;t mean that it is better, or right, or wasn&#8217;t created by <a href=\"http:\/\/pressbengel.blogspot.jp\/2011\/02\/bookbinders-at-work.html\">someone who was having an off day<\/a>. But the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alastore.ala.org\/pdf\/9780838910382_excerpt.pdf\">human ingenuity poured into every aspect<\/a> of a book-thing is awe-inspiring, and it is at the heart of my conservation efforts. The majority of special collections holdings <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/manuscripts\/FullDisplay.aspx?ref=add_ms_89000\">look pretty good<\/a> considering their age and everything they have been through. Bookbinding and book conservation communities continue to explore different ways of respecting history and original forms while improving on <a href=\"http:\/\/cool.conservation-us.org\/coolaic\/sg\/bpg\/annual\/v06\/bp06-01.html\">function<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outofbinding.com\/tp_introduction.htm\">considering contemporary aesthetics<\/a>. This practice in itself is a continuation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131017052042\/http:\/\/www.ub.uu.se\/en\/Just-now\/Projects\/Completed-projects\/A-medieval-book-mended-with-silk-thread\/\">tradition<\/a> of fixing, mending, and making useful again these <a href=\"http:\/\/aboutblooks.blogspot.com\/\">book objects<\/a> we can&#8217;t seem to live without.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Catchwords<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_N._Banks\">Paul Banks<\/a>&#8216; 10 Laws of Conservation. #1: No one can have access to a document that no longer exists.
