Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited.<\/p>\n<p>This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the talk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JoBeth Williams &#8217;70<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>JoBeth Williams has starred in many provocative films with cult followings throughout her career, including Steven Spielberg\u2019s\u00a0<em>Poltergiest I<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>II<\/em>, Lawrence Kasdan\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Big Chill<\/em>, Blake Edward\u2019s comedy\u00a0<em>Switch<\/em>,\u00a0the Farrelly brothers\u2019\u00a0<em>Fever Pitch<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>American Dreamer, Wyatt Earp<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Big Year<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Kramer vs. Kramer<\/em>.\u00a0She has appeared in well over twenty feature films, including Dennis Hopper\u2019s final movie, <em>The Last Film Festival<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She has received three <strong>Emmy nominations<\/strong>&#8211;for the television films\u00a0<em>Adam<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Baby M<\/em>, as well for the show <em>Frasier<\/em>, and two <strong>Golden Globe nominations<\/strong>.\u00a0Her television roles have been extensive. She played Ken Marino\u2019s mom on the NBC series <em>Marry Me<\/em>, recurred on the CW hit series <em>Hart of Dixie<\/em> as Candice Hart, played Bizzy Forbes Montgomery on <em>Private<\/em> <em>Practice<\/em>, starred in her own series <em>John Grisham\u2019s The Client<\/em>, and played opposite John Larroquette in CBS\u2019s comedy <em>Payne<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the camera, Williams received an <strong>Oscar nomination<\/strong> for her directing debut on the short film\u00a0<em>On Hope<\/em>\u00a0starring Mercedes Ruehl, for which she was also a producer. Following her nomination, Williams directed the Showtime original movie\u00a0<em>Frankie and Hazel<\/em>\u00a0starring Joan Plowright, as well as the Warner Brothers Television production <em>Night Visions<\/em>, starring Stephen Baldwin and Jane Adams.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond her acclaim for on camera performances, Williams also has extensive <strong>theatre credits<\/strong> both in New York and regional productions. Her theatre work in New York includes <em>Last Dance<\/em> by Marsha Norman, <em>Moonchildren<\/em>, <em>Ladyhouse Blues<\/em>, <em>A Couple of White Chicks<\/em>, John Guare&#8217;s <em>Gardenia<\/em>, and <em>The Vagina Monologues<\/em>.\u00a0 In regional theatre she is credited for her leads in <em>Antony and Cleopatra<\/em> at the Old Globe, <em>Idiot&#8217;s Delight<\/em> opposite Stacy Keach at the Kennedy Center, <em>Threepenny Opera<\/em> in Williamstown, <em>Cat on a Hot Tin Roof<\/em> at the McCarter Theatre, <em>Uncle Vanya<\/em>, <em>Tartuffe<\/em>, <em>School for Wives<\/em>, and two seasons at Trinity Repertory Company. In Los Angeles, Williams has appeared on stage at the Geffen Playhouse\u00a0in Jane Anderson&#8217;s <em>The Quality of Life<\/em>, for which she received a Backstage West Garland award, at the Taper in John Robin Baitz\u2019s play <em>Other Desert Cities<\/em>, at Pasadena Playhouse in <em>The Night is a Child<\/em>, and at the Odyssey in <em>The Fall to Earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She is the president of the <strong>Screen Actors\u2019 Guild Foundation<\/strong>, a charity that provides extensive programs both for working actors and for actors in times of need, as well as national children\u2019s literacy programs. She also serves as chairman of the <strong>SAG Awards Committee<\/strong>, which produces the SAG Awards each year.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Williams is a 1970 graduate of Brown University. She and husband John Pasquin, who will conduct the onstage interview during the Wilmeth Lecture, have two sons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Pasquin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.brown.edu\/libnews\/jobeth-williams\/misscongeniality\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9800\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9800\" src=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/01\/misscongeniality-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/01\/misscongeniality-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/libnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/01\/misscongeniality.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>John Pasquin\u00a0is an award-winning director and producer of film, television, and stage. His first play in New York was Michael Weller\u2019s <em>Moonchildren<\/em> for which he won an <strong>Obie Award<\/strong>. He then worked for Joe Papp at the Public Theatre and the New York Shakespeare Festival directing original work by Thom Babe and John Guare as well as <em>Comedy of Errors<\/em> and <em>Measure for Measure<\/em> in Central Park. He has worked for most East Coast Repertory Theaters including Long Wharf, McCarter, Center Stage, and Arena Stage.<\/p>\n<p>His television credits (over 100 half hour and hour episodes on all networks) include the pilots for <em>Home Improvement<\/em>, <em>Growing Pains<\/em>, <em>Freddie<\/em>, <em>Cristela<\/em>, and <em>Last Man Standing<\/em>. He has received a People\u2019s Choice Award and was <strong>nominated for<\/strong> <strong>three Emmys<\/strong> for his work on <em>Home Improvement<\/em> and <em>L.A. Law<\/em>. He has directed four feature films, including <em>The Santa Clause<\/em>, <em>Jungle 2 Jungle<\/em>, and <em>Miss Congeniality II<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This past fall he produced and directed the first four episodes of the <strong>re-boot of the <em>Roseanne<\/em> show<\/strong> with the entire original cast. It will air in March 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Emigh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Emigh, Professor Emeritus of Theatre, Speech and Dance and Professor Emeritus of English, will introduce JoBeth Williams and John Pasquin at the Wilmeth Lecture. He is a theatre director and performer who has written on the masked theatre and rituals of New Guinea, Bali, and India, as well as on Western theatrical practices. Works include <em>Masked Performance: The Play of Self and Other Ritual and Theatre<\/em>, and a film on the life of a Rajasthani street performer. He retired as\u00a0Asa Messer Professor Emeritus, Professor Emeritus of Theatre, Speech and Dance, and\u00a0Professor Emeritus of English in 2004.
