Argentinians named a city in Buenos Aires Province for him. Statues of Lincoln\u00a0can be found in Mexico, Cuba and Ecuador. Avenida Abraham Lincoln is a main thoroughfare in\u00a0the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Shown here is a more personal object: a lady\u2019s\u00a0fan, thought to have been produced in Havana. It commemorates Lincoln\u2019s life and\u00a0assassination in both English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Vida de Abran Lincoln, d\u00e9cimo sesto presidente de los Estados Unidos<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nDomingo Faustino Sarmiento (1811\u20131888)<br \/>\nNueva York, Estados Unidos: D. Appleton y Ca., 1866<br \/>\nBrown University Library, Special Collections<\/p>\n<p>In May 1865, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento arrived in New York to take up his post as minister\u00a0plenipotentiary to the United States from the newly reunified Argentine Republic. Arriving from\u00a0a country in triumph to a country in deep mourning, Sarmiento heard a great deal and thought\u00a0deeply about Lincoln, whose ideas about government he found engaging and with whom he felt\u00a0he would have had much in common.
