When the trumpet sounded
\neverything was prepared on earth,
\nand Jehovah gave the world
\nto Coca-Cola Inc., Anaconda,
\nFord Motors, and other corporations.
\nThe United Fruit Company
\nreserved for itself the most juicy
\npiece, the central coast of my world,
\nthe delicate waist of America.<\/p>\n
It rebaptized these countries
\nBanana Republics,
\nand over the sleeping dead,
\nover the unquiet heroes
\nwho won greatness,
\nliberty, and banners,
\nit established an opera buffa:
\nit abolished free will,
\ngave out imperial crowns, encouraged envy, attracted
\nthe dictatorship of flies:
\nTrujillo flies, Tachos flies
\nCarias flies, Martinez flies,
\nUbico flies, flies sticky with
\nsubmissive blood and marmalade,
\ndrunken flies that buzz over
\nthe tombs of the people,
\ncircus flies, wise flies
\nexpert at tyranny.<\/p>\n
With the bloodthirsty flies
\ncame the Fruit Company,
\namassed coffee and fruit
\nin ships which put to sea like
\noverloaded trays with the treasures
\nfrom our sunken lands.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile the Indians fall
\ninto the sugared depths of the
\nharbors and are buried in the
\nmorning mists;
\na corpse rolls, a thing without
\nname,\u00a0a discarded number,
\na bunch of rotten fruit
\nthrown on the garbage heap.<\/p>\n
