As was noted in Chapter 14, “Culture and Society,” in the early twentieth century the film industries of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Mexico began producing motion pictures that captured local particularities and reflected national aspirations. Since the 1960s, most countries have established national film schools, and directors, screenwriters, and even some actors, have won acclaim beyond the borders of Latin America.

We have chosen a small selection of the thousands of feature films and documentaries that are now available to a broad international audience. Most relate to specific historical and political moments or portray unique social phenomena of a given country. The traumas of the military regimes that dominated much of Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s have been of particular focus for many filmmakers, especially in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. On the other hand, the Mexican Revolution has remained a constant theme in commercial films in Mexico since the 1930s and 1940s, as has the plight of migrants leaving to the United States for work and a better life. Most Cuban films weave themes of that revolution into their work, while many other Caribbean and Central American films and documentaries address the effects of foreign investment on their societies and cultures. Many documentarians from Europe and the United States have also chosen contemporary political and social themes as a means of educating the uninformed about social problems and social change in Latin America and the Caribbean. We have included short synopses of the films drawn largely from descriptions provided by the producers.

Argentina
Bolivia
Brazil
Chile
Cuba
Dominican Republic
Ecuador
El Salvador
Guatemala
Haiti
Mexico
Nicaragua
Peru
Uruguay
Venezuela

Feature films and documentaries offer an excellent medium for understanding the history, politics, and culture of Latin America and the Caribbean.
