He was a political activist and guerrilla fighter in the revolutionary group MR-8. He went missing on May 14, 1971, when he was arrested by air force officers in Rio de Janeiro and was taken to the Gale\u00e3o air force base. His mother spent the following years searching for him, and her search for her son became highly public and symbolic to Brazilian society. As he was an American citizen, his disappearance also heightened the American government&#8217;s awareness about oppression in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>  &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s necessary to navigate.
