The film, which consisted of both interviews and simulations of the tortures frequently used in Brazilian prisons (such as the\u00a0<a title=\"parrot's perch\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pau_de_Arara#Torture_technique\">parrot&#8217;s perch<\/a>), was shocking because of the visceral nature of its content, but also because it exposed the violent excesses of Brazil&#8217;s military regime.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/wecannotremainsilent\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/03\/brazilreport.jpg\" alt=\"Pamphlet from screening of Brazil: A Report on Torture\" width=\"274\" height=\"324\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Medici came to the United States in December 1971, he originally planned to visit both\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/wecannotremainsilent\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/10\/brazil-report-on-torture-jpeg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2187\" src=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/create\/wecannotremainsilent\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2012\/10\/brazil-report-on-torture-jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"brazil report on torture jpeg\" width=\"255\" height=\"328\" \/><\/a>Washington and New York. His trip was later shortened to include only a brief stay in Washington, but members of an anti-dictatorship group in New York had already organized a screening of<em>\u00a0Brazil: A Report on Torture\u00a0<\/em>to coincide with his visit. Medici&#8217;s Foreign Minister, Barboza, was reported to have asked the State Department if anything could be done to discourage the presentation of the film during the visit.
