Our cold weather crops&#8211;peas, spinach, and carrots&#8211;are already in the ground and we&#8217;re dreaming of ripe tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>During World War I, many citizens planted Victory Gardens, vegetable, fruit and herb gardens, at homes and parks. These were designed to reduce the pressure on the food supply while boosting morale. The National War Garden Commission, organized in 1917, launched this war garden movement as well as a poster campaign encouraging the planting of these gardens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/cds\/askb\/\">Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection<\/a> is fortunate to own a number of posters promoting Victory Gardens.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/repository.library.brown.edu\/studio\/item\/bdr:242294\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2346 aligncenter\" alt=\"wargardensoverthetop\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/dps\/curio\/wp-content\/uploads\/wargardensoverthetop.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/find\/Record\/dc1280528288213625\">War Gardens Over the Top<\/a>\u201d shows a young boy with a hoe chasing fleeing ripe vegetables. The drawing is by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maginel_Wright_Enright\">Maginel Wright Barney<\/a>, a children\u2019s book illustrator and younger sister of architect Frank Lloyd Wright.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/dps\/curio\/wp-content\/uploads\/seedsofvictory1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2384\" alt=\"seedsofvictory\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/dps\/curio\/wp-content\/uploads\/seedsofvictory1.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The image in <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/find\/Record\/dc1280520522541750\">\u201cThe Seeds of Victory\u201d<\/a> was used in a number of posters. The illustrator, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Montgomery_Flagg\">James Montgomery Flagg<\/a>, is best known for his political posters, particularly his World War I recruiting poster featuring Uncle Sam pointing at the viewer with the caption \u201cI want YOU for the U.S. Army\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/repository.library.brown.edu\/studio\/item\/bdr:242227\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2348 aligncenter\" alt=\"fooddontwasteit\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/dps\/curio\/wp-content\/uploads\/fooddontwasteit.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height=\"1499\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/find\/Record\/dc1280538656760500\">\u201cFood: Don\u2019t Waste It<\/a>\u201d features sentiments that are familiar to us today.
