On June 1, 2013, Brown’s John Hay Library<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0built in 1910 and now home to the Library’s special collections \u2014 will close its doors for a major renovation of the first floor. (Updates on the project can be followed on the\u00a0John Hay Library Renovation website and blog<\/a>.) Many of the materials that Digital Production Services regularly captures, especially those from signature collections, are housed at “the Hay,” named after the Brown alumnus\u00a0(1838\u20131905)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, a substantial new biography of John Hay<\/a>\u00a0was published by Simon & Schuster (see a recent review from the New York Times<\/em><\/a>). Several images featured in the book were captured by Digital Production Services, including the\u00a0John Singer Sargent\u00a0(1856\u20131925)<\/a> portrait\u00a0used for the book’s cover, a photograph of a young John Hay, and a portrait of his wife, Clara Stone Hay.<\/p>\n

Apart from his connections to Brown, Hay was Abraham Lincoln\u2019s secretary and a diplomat under Theodore Roosevelt.\u00a0The Library’s online exhibit from 2008, “John Hay’s Lincoln and Lincoln’s John Hay<\/a>,” curated by American Historical Collections Librarian\u00a0Holly Snyder, highlights the Hay-Lincoln connection by way of additional original documents \u2014 now stored at the Hay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
