The exhibition &#8220;<em>Flatland<\/em> Worldwide and Edwin A. Abbott at 75 (+100)&#8221; opens in the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. library on November 1, 2013; Brown professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.brown.edu\/myresearch\/Thomas_Banchoff\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Banchoff<\/a>, mathematician and Abbott scholar, will present a related talk on Wednesday, November 13 (<a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/dsl\/events\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">at 5:30 p.m. in the Digital Scholarship Lab<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In 2005 the Library captured a <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/find\/Record\/dc1132758035656256\" target=\"_blank\">rare 1980 Arion Press edition of <em>Flatland<\/em><\/a>, limited to 275 copies, featuring aluminum covers, accordion-style page binding, and illustrations designed to integrate creatively with the text.\u00a0As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arionpress.com\/catalog\/007.htm \" target=\"_blank\">described by the Press<\/a>, this custom edition aimed to formally accentuate elements of the content:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size: 91%;\"><p>\u2026<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arionpress.com\/hoyem.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Hoyem<\/a>&#8216;s radical design and illustrations realize many implications of the book, such as: the &#8220;volume&#8221; can be opened out flat to form a thirty-foot plane; the plane-geometrical citizens of Flatland are infinitely thin (holes in paper); they cast shadows; their edges glow.\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Shown below are some sample spreads from the book.
