With my thoughts on these long awaited blossoms, I type &#8220;magnolia&#8221; into the <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.library.brown.edu\/studio\/search_results\/?search_terms=search_terms%3A%22Historia%20plantarum%20rariorum%22&amp;scope=Search\">Brown Digital Repository <\/a>and discover a beautiful 18th century hand colored\u00a0 intaglio print.\u00a0 The variety of magnolia\u00a0represented in the print is known as <em>Magnolia altissima lauro-cerassi folio, flore ingenti candido, Catesb. (<\/em>commonly called the <em>Laurel-Leaved Tulip Tree<\/em> or <em>Carolina Laurel) <\/em>and is named for 18th century naturalist, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Catesby\">Mark Catesby<\/a>. Catesby spent three years documenting the flora and fauna of South Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas in the 1720&#8217;s.<em> <\/em>The tree featured in the print produced its flowers in the garden of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Wager\">Sr. Charles Wager <\/a>at Parsons Green near <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fulham\">Fulham<\/a>, in August of 1737.\u00a0 The print was delineated and engraved by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georg_Dionysius_Ehret\">George Dennis Ehret<\/a> (1708-1770), and is part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Martyn_%28botanist%29\">Joannis Martyn<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/find\/Record\/b2984636\">Historia plantarum rariorum<\/a> [1. The volume is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.brown.edu\/collatoz\/info.php?id=74\">Albert E. Lownes Collection of Significant Books in the History of Science<\/a>, a collection particularly strong for illustrated materials on natural history.]<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/brown.edu\/Facilities\/Facilities_Management\/docs\/94109_BIOMED_tree_shrub_map.pdf\">Campus Guide to Trees and Shrubs<\/a>, Brown University is home to three varieties of magnolia trees; <em>Magnolia acuminata<\/em> or <em>Cucumber Tree,<\/em> <em>Magnolia soulangiana<\/em> or <em>Saucer Magnolia<\/em>, and <em>Magnolia stellata<\/em> or <em>Star Magnolia. <\/em>As the days warm, and I walk around campus during the coming month, I will be noting which of the fourteen stages the buds and blossoms are in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/repository.library.brown.edu\/viewers\/image\/zoom\/bdr:40368\/highres_jp2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3706\" alt=\"magnolia_detail\" src=\"http:\/\/library.brown.edu\/dps\/curio\/wp-content\/uploads\/magnolia_detail.jpg\" width=\"1407\" height=\"559\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1. The bud of the Flower as it first Appears.<br \/>\n2. The involucrum which encloses the Bud.<br \/>\n3. The Emplalement or Flower-cup.<br \/>\n4. The Flower-cup opening and discovering the Flower.<br \/>\n5. The cup falling of(sic) from the Flower.<br \/>\n6. The Flower-cup as it Appears before it is expanded.<br \/>\n7. The outside of the Apex or summit Represented.<br \/>\n8. The inside of the summit Represented.<br \/>\n9. The Ovary or Rudiment of the Fruit.<br \/>\n10. A Ripe Fruit with the seed falling from their cells and hanging by small threads.<br \/>\n11. A Seed as it Appears in it&#8217;s Cell.<br \/>\n12. A Seed falling out of it&#8217;s Cell.<br \/>\n13. The Footstalk with the marks where the Petals or Flower leaves were inserted.<br \/>\n14.
