Library Milestones 1987-1997
1987-88
- Acquisition of the Brown Library's 2,000,000th volume, a rare first edition,
in Russian, of Ivan Pavlov's Lectures on the Functions of the Main Digestive
Glands.
- Inaugural William Williams Awards presented.
- Dedication of Virginia Baldwin Orwig Music Library.

Josiah, the on-line public access catalog, unveiled to the public. Beginning
of the retrospective conversion of the card catalog into electronic form,
a task largely completed a decade later with the creation of over 800,000
electronic records.
1988-89
- Implementation of a permanent library-wide program aimed at preservation/
conservation of library materials.

Josiah available on campus network.
1989-90
- Completion of the National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant
which raised $3,000,000 in new acquisitions endowments.

Campus CD-Rom Network established.
1990-91
- Consolidation of Media Services' collection, staff and viewing facilities
in the Sciences Library.
l99l-92
- Dedication of the Brendel Government Documents Area as a memorial to the
late Alice B. Brendel, Government Documents Librarian, and to her husband
and daughter.

The 1,000,000th library record loaded into Josiah.

The kickoff of " Brown: The Rising Generation," a $450 million
fundraising campaign that included a $25 million component for the Library.
1992-93
- Pembroke Campus Library closed and collections transferred to the Rockefeller
Library.

The Library, working with Computer Information Service, brings up the Campus
Wide Information System, to provide a user-friendly method for accessing
a worldwide network of databases.

Social Science Data Center established within the Library's Government Documents
section, providing assistance to users of electronic information and numeric
data in the social sciences.

1993-94
- With a gift from Paul R. Dupee Jr.'65 the Library acquires new Josiah software
that fully integrates the on-line catalog, circulation and acquisitions
systems.

Funding received from the Champlin Foundations for the creation of a new
electronic reference and information center for the Rockefeller Library.

With a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, the Library completes
retrospective conversion of card catalog into electronic form.

Renovation of the Art Slide Library.
1994-95
- The University's Demography Library is transferred administratively to the
Library system.

The Library introduces its first Worldwide Web home page, thus making many
of the Library's resources available instantaneously around the globe.

Funding received from the Champlin Foundations for the creation of a new
electronic reference and information center in the Sciences Library. The
Library's first digital imaging venture commences with a project to scan
Art Slide Library slides to be used for students in the introductory art
history course.

The first public computer cluster to be located in the Library system is
installed in the Sciences Library.
1995-96
- The Library initiates its first thorough reorganization study in 20 years,
to position the Library's staff, collections, and services for new challenges
and opportunities in an increasingly electronic environment.

A National Endowment for the Humanities grant awarded which, when completed
in 2000, will establish a $3 million endowment to preserve the library's
collections.

With gift from Martha Sharp Joukowsky '58 P'87 and Artemis A. W. Joukowsky
'55 P'87, the Library establishes a Middle Eastern acquisition endowment
and creates a staff position for Middle Eastern bibliography.
1996-97
- Dedication of the Laura & Alfred Hecker Center for Library Technology in
the Rockefeller Library.

Creation of a new electronic reference and information center in the John
Hay and Orwig Music Libraries.

The Library celebrates its 3,000,000th acquisition with three notable additions
to its holdings given by Paul R. Dupee Jr. '65, the Dupee Collection of
Fireworks, the Dupee Mexican History Collection, and the Dupee Digital Reference
Collections.
