Rodgers and Hammerstein
Rodgers and Hammerstein: South Pacific
The late 1940s saw the presentation of two classic Rodgers and
Hammerstein
musicals. South Pacific dealt explicitly
with the issue of race relations, set on
an exotic island during
World War II. Ezio Pinza, an opera basso, made a
crossover to the
Broadway stage rare for an opera performer. Notable songs
included Some Enchanted Evening, I'm Gonna Wash That Man
Right Out of
My Hair, and Younger than Springtime.
Rodgers, Richard. South Pacific; a musical play, music by Richard Rodgers;
lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd; book by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd, and
Joshua Logan; adapted from James A. Michener's Pulitzer prize-winning
Tales of the South Pacific.

Rodgers and Hammerstein: Carousel.
Carousel, like Oklahoma! conceived as a
piece of Americana (though based on a
Hungarian source) also
relied heavily on dance for the play's development. Notable
songs
included June is Busting Out All Over, The Carousel Waltz, You'll
Never Walk
Alone, and Soliloquy.
