Royal Court Theatre. A Record and Commentary of the
Vedrenne-Barker Season, 1904-1905.
[London: David Allen & Sons, Ltd., 1905]
During the 1904-1905 opening season at the Royal Court Theatre under
the joint management of John Eugene Vedrenne and Harley Granville
Barker, five of Shaw’s plays were mounted. These were: John Bull’s
Other Island, Candida, How He Lied to Her Husband, You Never Can Tell,
and Man and Superman.
In the photographs of Man and Superman shown below, note
Granville Barker as John Tanner and Lillah McCarthy as Ann Whitefield.
Barker and McCarthy were husband and wife at the time. Their subsequent
divorce caused Shaw some difficulties since he was closely associated
with both.
