A Fine Afternoon for a Duel

On October 16, 1999 over 100 Friends of the Library, parents and sword enthusiasts gathered at the Annmary Brown Memorial for the dedication of the Cyril & Harriet Mazansky British Sword Collection.

The collection consists of 105 individual weapons ranging from highland and cavalry swords to presentation swords and rapiers.  It is comprehensive in its scope and covers the last four centuries of British history from before the English Civil Wars of the mid-seventeenth century through to the early twentieth century.

The audience at the opening was treated to a lecture/performance by members of Swashbuckler's Ink - Norm Beauregard and his brother Jimmy.  Norm, well know locally as one of the founders of The Cumberland Company, is a professional fight master who has choreographed movies, music videos and many stage productions.  He is also an expert on swords and their history.

The performers fought in a number of weapons from early broad swords to the more familiar rapier.  Norm Beauregard will soon be teaching a stage combat class here at Brown and it is hoped that his students will be able to act as docents for the sword exhibit.
