A portion of the roughly $10,000 profit from the 1994 Friends Holiday Cards sale will be used to buy a collection of 18th Century Rhode Island financial manuscripts, mostly from Newport, for the John Hay Library. The new collection complements the Library's existing holdings of early Rhode Island manuscripts.

If Brown had not bought the latest group of manuscripts, the collection probably would have been broken up and sold outside of Rhode Island for the manuscripts' autograph value.

Profits from the 1993 Holiday Cards sale helped pay for the daVinci Manoscritti dell'Institut de France (a particularly sumptuous facsimile) for the John Hay.

In 1992, card sale profits were used to purchase The Birds of North America, a reference series of 18 volumes, for the Sciences Library.
